Family-friendly Rotorua activities in the rain
It’s pretty easy to let your spirits drop when you’ve planned your Rotorua holiday only to find a couple of rainy days headed your way. Don’t stress, Rotorua has plenty of rainy day activities that are fun for the whole family. Have a look at some of my favorite activities that I’ve done in the rain.
Rotorua Duck Tour
One of the things you’ll want to do when you visit Rotorua with the family is to see the beautiful lakes district. If it is raining it’s not so enjoyable to sit by the lake or go for a scenic walk but the Duck is the answer! We have clear, plastic roll down windows that allow you to see the district from land and lake on New Zealand’s only genuine WW2 landing crafts. We also operate on sheltered lakes and lets face it – our vehicle is designed to get wet!! Don’t let the rain get you down. Jump on a Duck and see what the stunning lakes district has to offer!

Hot Pools
Bathing in a geothermal spa is a great way to spend a day in the rain. Many of the pools in town are sheltered but even if they aren’t you’re going to get wet anyway! The Polynesian Spa on the Rotorua lakefront is a great option because they have both adult and family pool options under shelter. You can also look out over Lake Rotorua and I find it even more therapeutic to see the rain splash into the sheltered Sulfur Bay.
Rotorua Canopy Tours
If you don’t mind being out in the rain then the Canopy Tour is a great option. The canopy of the forest comes alive in the rain with vibrant colours and bird life. Not only that but zipping through the forest in the rain is great fun! Canopy Tours has a minimum age of 6 years old so its a great family activity. Don’t worry too much about the rain either because they give you huge rain jackets that will keep you warm!
Motion Entertainment
New Zealand’s largest entertainment mall! When it doubt, go inside! At Motion you can find Mini Golf, Tenpin Bowling, Trampoline Park, Escape Rooms, Cafe and more! You can have fun with the kids and when you get tired you can relax and recharge with a coffee in the Cafe. Rain can’t hurt you here!
