Visit Rotorua – A Domestic Location With An International Feel

Why choose a Rotorua visit? The simple fact is that right now we can’t go overseas and probably won’t be able to for a while. We all need to get away sometimes and if you want the ‘international’ experience without being able to go overseas then a Rotorua visit could be the solution. Rotorua is unlike any other town in New Zealand with our geothermal activity, amazing hot pools, lush native forests, sparkling lakes and adventure activities. I’m going to do my best to explain why I think Rotorua has an ‘international flair’ right on our doorstep.

New Zealand’s Lake District

Lake Okareka and Mt Tarawera

One of the reasons that we bought the Ducks to Rotorua is that we have 18 unique and stunning lakes within a small drive from the city center. No other location in New Zealand has this privilege. Don’t get me wrong there are amazing lakes around the country! Ours are different colours, temperatures and have unique attractions involved with them. On the Duck Tour we see both the Blue and Green Lakes which of course are different in colours. We see Tarawera which is home to a volcano that changed our history in 1886. We visit Okareka which is a bird sanctuary surrounded by million-dollar homes. You could also visit Rotoma, the cleanest lake in the district or have a bathe in the hot pools at Rotoiti. The possibilities are endless! Being able to explore all the different possibilities is something that makes a Rotorua visit something to seriously consider as a holiday solution. Check out our tours and let us show you what the lakes have to offer.

The Redwoods

The Redwoods are great for all activities

Rotorua Redwoods

The largest plantation of the California redwood trees outside the state of California. If you’re looking for an international flair to your domestic holiday this sure fits the bill! You can choose to walk around this forest for free. There are walks from 20 minutes right through to 8-hour full day hikes. If you bring your dogs with you on your trip there is also an area that you can exercise dogs off the lead. If you are feeling adventurous you could also choose to do the Redwoods Treewalk or Redwoods Altitude. The Redwoods Treewalk allows you to walk on special elevated platforms through the canopy of the forest for a unique and immersive experience. Redwoods altitude is a little more extreme and features swing bridges, ziplines and higher up in the trees. Well worth checking out during your Rotorua visit.

Geothermal Activity

Rotorua Geyser

Not many people realise that Rotorua is settled inside an extinct caldera or super volcano. This means that when you visit Rotorua you are going to see some interesting things that you might not be used to! The most obvious is the smell. Rotorua has a distinct Sulphur smell that comes from the geothermal vents that are present in the city. Also featured are geysers, steam vents, mud pools and naturally heated springs. Rotorua, as a result, is also home to award winning hot springs such as the Polynesian Spa rated one of the top 10 spas in the world. The silica that is present in our geothermal water is said to slow the signs of aging. If you’re looking for an out of the box experience why not visit Rotorua and relax in our therapeutic waters.

So while we may not be able to travel overseas it doesn’t mean we can’t get a real holiday in our own backyard. Visit Rotorua and see all we have to offer. You won’t be disappointed and you’ll finally get to solve your holiday blues.
